The Origin and Etymology of "蟲"
The character “虫” (cung4/chóng) was originally a pictograph of a poisonous snake, andit’s derivative character “蟲” came to mean “worm” or “insect”. “蟲” is both a word and a radical found in many words relatedto insects or smaller forms of life such as “蛇” (se4/shé) “snake”,“蝦”(haa1/xiā) “shrimp”, “蝶” (dip6/dié) “butterfly” and “蜂” (fung1/fēng) “bee”.
