One way to begin writing Chinese characters is to start with the eight basic strokes in Chinese calligraphy: 點 (dot), 横 (line), 撇 (curve), 捺 (press), 豎 (vertical), 折 (corner), 鈎 (hook), and 提 (pick).

With these basic strokes, we can start to learn some simple characters that are easy to recognise and have simple stroke order.

Here are six simple characters to practice some of these basic strokes: 一 (one), 十 (ten), 土 (earth), 口 (mouth), 日 (sun), 田 (field). Grab a pen and paper with your little one, and let's get started!

Can you name the basic strokes used to form these characters?

You'll need: a colour printer + 2 sheets of A4 or letter size paper. Laminate the writing sheets out for multiple use.

To download: Click "Add to Cart" and follow the check out instructions. No payment necessary. You'll be provided with a link to download the file shortly after.
